Education? Our educational system used to be the best in the world. The government ruined it.
Health care? Same thing.
Thanks, liberals.
On the other hand, Government is responsible for the profitability of the corn industry, and best of all, for all that delicious high fructose corn syrup!
What? Public education has long been the cornerstone of the US education system. It is in most states constitutions.
EXAMPLES:
Pennsylvania: Section 14. Public School System
The General Assembly shall provide for the maintenance and support of a thorough and efficient system of public education to serve the needs of the Commonwealth.
Texas: Sec. 1. SUPPORT AND MAINTENANCE OF SYSTEM OF PUBLIC FREE SCHOOLS. A general diffusion of knowledge being essential to the preservation of the liberties and rights of the people, it shall be the duty of the Legislature of the State to establish and make suitable provision for the support and maintenance of an efficient system of public free schools.

Strange, the "government" has been involved in the educational system since 1860 when the Office of Education (the forerunner of the Dept of Education) was established. The same office that administered the Morrill that established the system of land-grant colleges and universities many of which are the preeminent colleges and universities in their respective states.
On another note...
Yes the government ruined the fires that burned on the Cuyahoga River, it ruined the ability to dump PCB's in the nation's waterways. It ruined the Tennessee Valley by providing electricity to rural communities. It ruined two lane highways that sort of connected the United States by building the interstates highway system. I ruined the ability to kill off the nations workforce by establishing the Occupational Safety and Heath Administration. And think of how it ruined the snake oil business when it established the Food and Drug Administration. I could go on, but what would be the point.

When did government not run the public schools system?
Quote:
The US government became a major player no later than 1967.
However, direct federal involvement was only a later phase of a much longer-running process and plan to centralize and socialize American education. In 1930, there were still 144,102 largely independent local school boards. This number shrank steadily to 83,719 in 1950, and only 18,000 by 1970. Any idea of "independence" steadily faded as well.
The socialization of American education goes back a lot further. In the 19th century, the states were much more independent of federal government than they are today. Therefore government controlled schooling began in each state before it was finally tied together in the federal government. The beginnings of government run school go back to Massachusetts and Horace Mann around 1840. We might choose the 1852 Massachusetts tax-supported compulsory schooling legislation as "the beginning of a new epoch in schooling."
You really need to be more specific as to what period in time, which legislation and who and what was behind the changes you are referring to. You are painting with too broad a brush while pointing fingers at who you think "ruined" education/schools.
Most of the top schools in the country are public schools. How about in silicon valley is there any big revolt against public schools?? Please answer that.
While your at it why aren't seniors up in arms over Medicare and demanding to get on Ryan Care which is very similar to Obamacare? How about Tricare and the VA I don't see anyone demanding privatization there?

Not Federal involvement in it. Also, it's only recently that the government tried to make the college degree the new high school degree by creating an artificial supply of paying customers.

OK, so now you are refining your argument to "state governments good, federal government bad"?

Private > Run by city/county > Run by state > Run by numbskulls in D.C. drumming up 1-size-fits-all policies
You know what's even better than private schools, if we're going to judge quality by standardized test scores? Home-schooling.
