Having said that would you agree that the government shouldn't interfere with the firearms rights of law abiding citizens to try and prevent that once in a lifetime situation?

Schools seem to be turning into prison like places.
And the "evolution" continues.
Drug sniffing dogs walking the hallways, locker checks for weapons/drugs, metal detectors at doors and now armed guards patrolling the halls.
And you want to send your 5 year old off to a place like this every day for the next 13 years ?
I'd prefer to send my children to a place that has armed guards to protect them than to send them to a "gun-free" hunting preserve for the criminally insane.

The "gun nuts" haven't created the danger of society. First of all, society is dangerous by definition. When you take many people of different cultures and backgrounds and put them all together, there is going to be tension.
Second, what has contributed far more to society's danger than the 2nd Amendment ever has is the catch and release prison for profit system that the United States has embraced. Under this system, which makes the mistaken assumption that violent offenders can be rehabilitated, there is no true deterrent for someone who wishes to commit a violent act.
Didn't a lot of NRA supporters want armed teachers. That's not quite the same as security guards
And that was my point. Far right conservatives on this board were cheering about the idea of arming teachers, but now, because the Obama administration announced they plan to expand and enhance an EXISTING grant program to put 1,000 more law enforcement officers (school resource officers) in schools--they think the administration has either changed their position on guns OR that it's the end of the world. Our school currently has a school resource officer through a federal grant awarded to our sheriff's department.

How far do you go with that, what happens when kids leave the school for other activities, do we need armed guard escorts at football games, boy scouts. Seems like an overreaction.

BS, there were lefties all over this board stating cops or armed teachers was a bad idea, then low and behold, obama says...well maybe....and now the left is in lock step spinning saying they wanted this the entire time....
