I think your confusing the IRS and the NSA. Not every government agency has
surveillance capability...I doubt that matters much to you, but there it is.
The IRS may not have surveillance capability but they sure can keep track of plenty of information about you. They also have the power to fine you or put you in jail. But I doubt that matters to you.
Obama thought it would stay a secret and only admits this after there is a leek. A few weeks ago he said the war on terror is over, the tide of war is receding and terrorism is over. At the same time he expands a dragnet to watch the American people. The patriot act on steroid to watch the American people.
If you speak out against this administration are you the enemy? We saw the IRS going after Americans who speak out on conservative values.
The Federal government is watching you. Obama says that's fine, you should trust the government. If you can't trust the government then we're going to have some problems here.
Obama is saying it is the American's peoples fault, anyone who does not trust the government is wrong, it's your fault for not trusting the government.
Is the administration using this massive surveillance to find Tea Party supporters like they did with the IRS? Sure they could get support from congress and judges if they say there is an imminent danger. But what they do with the information is up to the leanings of the bureaucrat doing the wiretap. Americans have lost all confidence in the government and especially in the current administration. We need to go back to protecting our constitution. (OOPs another one of those evil keywords.)
This is the same government and administration which refused to properly follow up a warning from the Russian government about known terrorists living in Boston. The same government that wants to reward all foreigners coming here illegally.

Im aware of the IRS' mandate. Do have a problem with those convicted in a federal court [with due process] of an IRS violation going to jail or paying a fine?

But that is every liberal voter. Liberals don't question anything. They know they must toe the party line or else. That's the way the liberal party has become -- there can be no liberal for example who thinks welfare handouts aren't wonderful. No liberal questions his party's view on abortion. There is no dissent allowed among liberals.
Yes I think Obama was trying to get in front of this knowing that people will start to scream tyranny, some call it soft tyranny. Obama said to reject those voices. Obama also said his administration would be the most transparent administration in history but this has been proven wrong. I noticed that when Obama says something expect the opposite.
