The way I see it, the Union won, the Confederacy lost.

We could look at the WBTS as a foreign army (north) against a domestic army (south).

Well. consider this. The South have far few immigrants compared to the North. So it would make sense that the Northern army would have foreigners within its ranks.
The point is, the South lost. The Union was saved and that was that.
