Imagine having to pay for your car to be repaired and then having to make an EXTRA, under the table payment to the mechanic, ie his wages.

Now that would be strange as you would expect the employer to cover this one, as that is what you are paying for.

So why does this charade even exist?

of course, I am referring to the obligatory tipping system in restaurants, diners, bars etc, where the tip covers the min wage.

So does anyone actually agree with this archaic system?

One way or another, consumers fund the payroll, utilities, insurance, stock, waste, theft, rent, admin overhead and profits of those who sell product/services.

Tipping is not the norm in some parts of some nations. The cost of service is factored into the price of the meal along with all other costs. Either way, diners are paying for service.

As I understand it, tipping was a concept imported from Europe shortly after the Civil War. It's been controversial, ever since.

Easy enough to avoid. Dine at home.

Running away from issues is not my style, so the dine at home thing does not cut it with me.

Basically, it is a vestige of feudalism that causes social malaise and division.

The practice should be abolished forthwith.

What's the difference? You are going to pay one way or the other.

Without customers, employees wouldn't have jobs.

Big difference, because for 1 the employer is let off the hook.

2. Waitress that is unattractive gets a bum deal

3. Customer is harassed to tip

4. This causes division

True, but why should the customer pay the wage and the tab?

Higher wages means higher prices for meals and drinks...the consumer will pay one way or another.
At least this way you tip according to the level of service your server gives you

And anyone who tips on the attractiveness/unattractiveness of the server and not their level of service is an idiot
