CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — He looks like a typical 7-year-old boy, but on Tuesday night, Sam Grant is facing charges that many adults never will.

He is charged with two felonies for something that happened when his mother turned her back for just a second. His parents told Eyewitness News that they're outraged.

Don't worry, his attorney will arrange a plea bargain to a misdemeanor reckless conduct charge which will result in informal probation for a few years and the kid being eligible to have his record either sealed or expunged.

Hopefully this will all be done before middle school.

The parents have it all wrong. A BB gun should be considered to be a firearm and if they thought that it was a toy, they were irresponsible in leading Sam to think so as well.

Sam wouldn't be in this predicament if the parents had taught him proper respect for firearms and how to use them safely.

Maybe parents should teach their kids that guns aren't toys. Or find things for their kids to play with that aren't dangerous weapons.

March 23, 2013: POLK COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

A 10-year-old Polk County boy who was shot in the head with a BB gun has died.

Skyler Richardson was accidentally shot by his 13-year-old brother at close range last week near their home in Frostproof.

Investigators said the boys recently were given Daisy Powerline 880S BB/pellet guns and were firing at targets outside when the older brother accidentally shot his sibling.

Let's see...

1... 7 year old with a BB gun (not a great idea)
2... turning back on 7 year old with a BB gun (just plain stupidity)
3... DA pressing charges against said 7 year old (dumber than dirt)

To the parents: Adult supervision means just that.
To the DA: You are a moron!

The parents had a dangerous lapse of judgement. To charge a seven-year-old seems a misguided abuse of power. Instead, reprimanding or fining the parents makes more sense.

The parents should face charges for child neglect and public endangerment, not the child.

The charges did get the parents attention. She knew he was shooting at a house across the street. She's an idiot for allowing him to shoot across a street.

Yes it's sort of a waste of time to charge a 7 year old with a felony which is why the prosecutor should have tried to find a way to charge the parents.
