It seem like many boomers seem to think we are just lazy and that there are no problems with the labor market. Meanwhile, we do think there are impediments to our progress.

Should we start emigrating? For example, someone with just a HS diploma or a liberal arts degree can go teach English overseas amd someone wanting to go into the trades can go move to Canada or Australia.

You can do whatever you feel is best for yourself...it's a free country. Just remember wherever you go, you'll still be responsible for feeding yourself and your family (if you have one).

Yes...in fact I think Gen Y should consider emigrating if the opportunity being presented is a good one.

I'm Gen X; I turn 38 this year and have spent as much of my working life in Europe as I have in the USA. I wouldn't go back to Europe to live/work, but I am still open to the idea of emigrating, most likely to Canada. This country is going down the toilet. I only left Europe because the situation there was worse...if you can imagine that.

Yes! Maybe Gen-Y needs to understand not everyone will make it in Portland or Seattle in a flooded job market where every open position gets several hundreds if not thousands of resumes. That's not something they want to hear though.

Should Gen Y start emigrating?

Sure, if they want.

If they think they'll have it easier elsewhere then here, they're kidding themselves. But what better way is there to get a dose of reality, than to strike out on their own?

Good luck. They can always come back if they wind up falling on their faces. Falling on your face is just part of life. Part of the learning process. You get up and move on.

Australia's unemployment is around 5% and tradies make between $100K and $250K. That seems easier than here.

I have an internship and finishing up my grad studies. It is a general question, not specific to my circumstances.

They probably should but they need to keep in mind that every other country in the world has immigration laws and also most countries try to get only the best qualified immigrants. It's not like here where there is no enforcement of the immigration laws and the least capable, least educated are given preference and those who show up illegally are rewarded with citizenship and financial aid for college if they think they're too good for menial work.
