Their names are important because the kids are clearly hispanic which is a pretty decent indicator that this is more about nationalism than racism.

I'm a little confused that you say it's absolutely fine for people to fly flags of their heritage but these guys can't do the same for the USA? What if the other school has a large (recent) immigrant population and they are waving the Mexican flag in the stands at some of the schools games? Is that ok but the USA stuff isn't?

Nice try ignoramus. I'm not a liberal. The children deserved suspension.
So says Hitler........you'd make a lovely influence on children. and go away with this kind of thinking. Kids get suspended for serious issues not for being who they are.

And what is the need for nationalism at a game between two American high schools? Again, be sensible.

BTW, Hispanics can be of all backgrounds. Most of this ancestors can be European...or African...or Amerindian.

I wonder if they would have gotten in trouble for chanting "Cheese bur gers!"
Obviously racist, because it's an American-originated food, therefore implying that people not from America have inferior cultural tastes.

Actually no I wasn't. But this has nothing to do with the point of this topic. Was the other side draped in Mexican colors and waving around mexican flags. If so then the chant would actually have a point. But, since that wasn't mentioned or even shown, I highly doubt that was the case.

See here's the problem with your argument. This doesn't seem to be an expression of the love of our country. This wasn't patriotism. It actually was a perversion of it. The administrator didn't suppress anything they could have gone on chanting USA outside the gym if they wanted. You guys are being obtuse on purpose.

I mean you are the same guys that complain about Jamie Foxx's jokes and how he shouldn't be able to say them.

Kids say stupid things all the time. That doesn't make it racist.
Yes I agree it was stupid, considering most the people down there are most likely hispanic regardless of who they were cheering for.

More context needed.

But, odd to consider it a racist chant... that's not the right word. Nationalist, maybe. Insulting towards the other team, maybe... especially if it's a rival high school that has a lot of immigrant kids.

The Offenders seem to have Hispanic background based on the last names... but even "Americans of Hispanic descent" can have ill feelings towards people from other countries... especially newer immigrants.

So, my verdict: Not racist, but not necessary. Suspension a bit silly. Detention more appropriate.
