People choose to smoke. If they do, get cancer and die then Darwinism has done it's thing. The government is working on banning smoking's effect on those that choose not to smoke and attempting to control second hand smoke.

You can say the same thing about cars but there are rules there as well. Seat belt laws, speed limits, laws against drunk driving, needing a license, needing to register your car, insurance etc.

There is no comparison in smoking, driving and guns because 1) the right to bear arms is a constitutional right and 2) it's easier to get a gun than it is to get a car but people don't care about the rules behind owning and operating a car or smoking because it's not a right. It's a privilege.

I think people should be able to own guns but there still needs to be laws behind that. Background checks, registration and then higher penalties for crimes committed with a gun. Also hold the gun owner responsible as well. If your weapon is used by someone else while it is still registered to you then you are liable. Unless you sold it and have proof of that sale or you lose it and file a police report the gun owner should be responsible. Keep your guns.....just be responsible with them.

Seriously? This is a left/right issue? Cigarettes! Good grief. Oh yeah, remember the ban on alcohol in the twenties? Are you aware of the current war on drugs? How about the "lawful" dispensing of prescriptions by the Big Pharma industry? Ooooh, too right wing for you? The complete failure of all this banning of whatever, never works. We are human beings living in a free society. Left, right or center its not going to work. Oh and getting tax revenues from cigs, why the heck not? Do you prefer to allow your tax dollars go to yet another unfunded ban, or charge those that are doing the dirty deeds for their bad habits?

Why hasn't the right?

Could it be those powerful southern tobacco lobbies that prevent either side from banning cigs?
( I have no horse in this race)

Smoking in confined public places is banned in most civilized parts of the country because the 2nd hand effects of cancer stick smoke can pose health risks to others. You're free to suck all those toxins in the comfort of you're own bunker.

Also, I didn't know the "left" whoever the hell that is had the power to ban anything.

Sure, and the right's obsession with gay marriage, abortion, drugs, prayer in schools, etc, have NOTHING to do with imposing their beliefs on others... okay, if you say so!

Face it, both the Republicans and Democrats want to impose their beliefs, they just have different specific interests. That's why I associate with neither party, and prefer to err on the side of libertarianism... basically I don't care what anyone does, as long as it's not directly harming an unwilling participant. Try it sometime.

And I have spoken to conservatives who believe the boogieman is coming to get their guns and they have been believing it since 2008.
