The problem is that there's no guarantee there will be any good guys left, post-collapse, to pick up the pieces.

Look at the slanted nonsense choices of this poll above. That is the key to a successful demoocracy: What is offered is all that will be considered. Aren't we lucky to be so well-represented?
And to think, we invade other countries to try to "export" it.
Always against their wishes, too!

It seems to me we're at the point of a crisis. Absent the conversion of one side or the other, the present arrangement isn't sustainable. The divisions are just too deep.

That's my opinion. What's yours?
My opinion is that you need to stop whining and accept the results of the election. It's the will of the people

Who's whining? I accept the results of the election for what they are: the corrupt vote of a corrupt people for a corrupt president.

Democracy has always been touted as a means of keeping the country together, resolving differences, and preventing violent revolutions. That's true when a democratic people shares a foundational culture and morality. We don't have that anymore.

We don't just disagree about the minimum wage, the gold standard, and labor unions - we disagree about who's human and who isn't; about whether killing innocent children is right or wrong; about what marriage is and what it isn't; about the authority and even the existence of God; and about the nature and purpose of man.

Democracy can't bridge this divide.

Is there a future for Democracy?

Good Question.
Its worked well for a few hundred years and was instrumental in making the USA the greatest country/power on Earth. However in the past people would vote for their choice of party or candidate and when the election was over youd either be happy your choice triumphed or say Bah! we'll get ya next time, then every one would go back to what they were doing working together for the betterment of the country..
In the last 4 years a major change has occurred now instead of saying Bah my guy didnt win and then going back to tend the needs of the country the losing political machine is now sitting on its butt and doing nothing but conspiring to bring down the duly elected government in an apparent never ending hissy fit,and the people instead of going back to work with their neighbor and putting their ideological differences aside for the next four years they are instead hating their neighbors because of political differences in ideology.
If this scenario continues democracy is dead and civil war and anarchy loom large as intolerance replaces compromise and people are too blinded by hatred and avarice to notice the ship is sinking, when they do notice it will be too late.
As an outside observer to the plight of America and being some one with no skin in the game other than being a neighbor it appears the rightwing elements of your political structure have gone nuts.

Honestly, we should have more of a direct democracy, without all of these corrupted lobbyists who are nothing but impediments to the government, and constantly kill bills for things such as light rail, or bills supporting true energy independence (solar+wind power, walk-able community zoning, bullet train networks).
