I am a registered independent. But, maybe I just didn't know I was a Republican until now. God bless Abraham Lincoln!
seahawkgirl, it's already been pointed out that the cited material was not Lincoln's. May I provide a few actual words of Lincoln's, with proper attribution, for you to consider whether they sound more like a modern Democrat or a modern Republican.
Quote:
Labor is prior to and independent of capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration. Capital has its rights, which are as worthy of protection as any other rights. Nor is it denied that there is, and probably always will be, a relation between labor and capital producing mutual benefits.

Welcome to the party.
I have never entertained the thought of becoming a D, but from my perspective, the biggest difference in Ds then and now is with blacks. They used to be super religious, super hard-working, they disciplined their kids, and maybe they still are/do, but by being with a party that boos God seems like it would drive them away.
And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country.
Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God's work must truly be our own.
- John F. Kennedy 1961
From JFK to "Obama's gonna pay for my gas, mortgage and cell phone"
Oh how far the democrats have fallen. They'd label JFK a radical right wing Republican today.
cautious foreign policy
less military spending
federal funding for education
federal funding for scientific research
federal funding for infrastructure
fair trade
support for farmers
a robust civil rights package for blacks
Democratic Party Platform of 1960:
pro-life
pro-abstinence
hawkish foreign policy
increased military spending
top marginal tax cuts
corporate tax cuts
free trade
partial privitization of social security
Talk is cheap but inspiring. Too bad Republicans don't do what they say. That goes for their opposition as well.
True, true.....
