Can't say I blame him for not wanting to pay taxes in both countries.
I have lived in various countries, France included, and had to file income tax returns in the US every one of those years. I was careful to always stay under the foreign earned income exemption to avoid being double-taxed and making my taxes extremely complicated. One year, I stopped working in September to avoid going over that limit.
Seems to me he took off before the tax hikes took effect. I believe these hikes will indeed cause France harm but I dislike articles like this no matter what my beliefs are.
The article doesn't actually mention Depp or anything to substantiate the claim. From what I recall, he took off quite awhile ago supposedly over the split with his long time girlfriend.
Which does not mean that is why he left. It could be. Maybe that's why he split with his long time girlfriend but simple conjecture does not make something factual.
Typical liberal do as I say while I do something completely different.
First of all, you don't know that he's liberal. Secondly, he's not French, and retains the right to leave a foreign country if he chooses.
When Depp himself says that he left because of taxes, then i'll believe it. Until then, none of you have any idea why he left, nor should you care. You'd do good to worry about your own taxes.
What? Hang on a minute; why did he leave France? He makes a sour noise, part grunt, part hurrumph. "Cos France wanted a piece of me. They wanted me to become a permanent resident. Permanent residency status – which changes everything. They just want," and he mimes peeling off notes in his palm. "Dough. Money."
If Depp spends more than 183 days in France, he explains indignantly, he'd have to start paying income tax. "I'm certainly not ready to give up my American citizenship. You don't have to give up your American citizenship," he adds sarcastically, but then he'd have to pay tax in both countries, "so you essentially work for free."
