The federal government provides a good deal of the funding for residency and medical school slots. If a department could have more residents, they certainly would want them, as work would be distributed over a larger number of people.

So if you want more doctors, just ask your congressman to raise your taxes to fund more medical school and residency slots. The AMA has nothing to do with training positions and is just a political organization. However, given the lack of funds available, one will see a DECLINE in the number of residency and medical school positions in the future, not an increase. What will happen? More and more people will be seen by ancillary providers, such as nurse practitioners and PAs. In the future, you will be pining for the "good old days" when you could see a board certified, US trained physician fairly quickly.

How did people ever get in their heads that the AMA controls anything in medicine? Most specialists are not even AMA members, as it is considered a left leaning organization that represents primary care docs.

(Sigh), nice rant. Family doctors and GPs do not make that much.

This site provides some decent well-sourced information:

Quote:
The mean annual salary of a MD specialist is $175,011 in the US, and $272,000 for surgeons.
Physician Salaries

As of July 2010:

Doctors in Family Practice range from $175,000 to $220,196 per year, or about $58/hour which is less than many lawyers make. Hell, it's less than some union workers make.

As I pointed out earlier, $400,000 per year is not a lot of many. You spend 1,000 hours per year in surgery, then:

$400,000 / 1,000 hours = $400 per hour, which is not outrageous at all.

Spend 1,400 hours in surgery and that comes to:

$400,000 / 1,400 hours = $285 per hour.

At 2,000 hours per year consulting and in surgery:

$400,000 / 2,000 = $200/hour -- and many lawyers and consultants make more than that.

So I don't know what you're all going on about. This is just more Penis Envy and Breast-implant Envy. Get over it.

Debunking...

You mean we ought to cut doctors' pay so insurance executives can get even more money? I don't think so. When you are sick do you expect one of them to treat you?

No- The AMA plays a minor role in that regard.

Medical school in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

While the AMA has a minor role in accredidation, the major hurdle is funding, which is determined by federal and state funds.

For residency positions, the accredidation is made by the boards of the relative subspecialties. For instance, if an anesthesia program goes off kilter, they are evaluated by the American Board of Anesthesia, not the AMA, Joint Commission, or federal or state entities. The same holds true of other residency programs.

Again, I find it very amusing that the public thinks the AMA is like some kind of physician "guild" that is designed to protect "the trade". The AMA is a leftist political organization; most physicians are not members of the AMA due to this fact.

And we are in the problem we are in now precisely because we have lawyers running the government. Lawyers look at LAW, not JUSTICE or what is practical. It is not surprising, given that nearly all of our representatives are lawyers, that they seem to come out of "public service" extremely wealthy. Leave it to a lawyer to skin his "client". In this case, it is the American people.

If the government was run by physicians, we probably would have a balanced budget and some sense to federal spending. We live by common sense- lawyers live by personal profit.

As evidenced by the incestuous point tort reform went unconsidered by the Democrats, who receive the vast majority of lawyer campaign kickbacks, and no doubt, lawyers would have extorted them to deep six it if it started in the ACA.

Lawyers, like used car salemen, are amongst America's least trusted professionals.
