How nice it would be if we only gave food stamps to the disabled, elderly, and people who actually qualify for them (to an extent of around 2 consecutive years)? Yes, I understand that sometimes life throws you curveballs, but if you can't at least find a job in a few years and support yourself (if you're not disabled/elderly), it's your fault.

To people saying not to cut food stamps but to cut our military: Yes, I do agree that we need to cut our military. But it needs to be GRADUAL. Do you know how much our economy would be hurting if we suddenly cut the military in half, or even 1 quarter?
I guess this was what Eisenhower was warning us about when talking about the military industrial complex.

Here is a better break down of spending. However, none of that is going to tell you about all the money JPM(or any other corp) is making for the govt.

Because figures with government spending show government revenue.

I didn't say it's OK. I don't think it is. But I think at least half of that money is going to people who need it. 100% of money paid to companies making record profits is going to people who don't need it.

Do you think it's OK that rich people can buy themselves low taxes and laws to protect their interests? Is that what capitalism is all about to you? Is a pay-to-play government an actual democracy?

Considering that the most effective to get votes is to campaign. Since campaigning is very expensive, corporations donate to those in congress so that those in congress can improve their own interests plus the corporations. Right now that's the way it works. It's not OK, but you have to admit that it will be very difficult to make it otherwise.

Campaigning spending is the most effective way to increase votes (see Rick Santorum and Iowa). Because the money for campaign spending comes from corporations and because money from corporations has huge benefits to the congressmen, until you change the system of lobbying and donating from the richest you're going to have to put up with the money being stolen from taxpayers and going to the rich.

If you want to change that don't expect the fight to be easy.

Lucy, something isnt adding up here...
Food stamps are based on a simple formula:

Income - out-of-pocket (housing + medical) expense.

1) Many people are exhausting their unemployment benefits and thus becoming eligible for food stamps.

2) Rents are rising in many areas, rapidly in some. Higher housing cost = more people eligible for food stamps.

Both. The people going back to work are the short-term unemployed. The long-term unemployed are not going back to work; their unemployment benefits are dropping off and they are becoming newly eligible for food stamps.

The money made off of JPM shares in govt accounts, many many different funds of shares invested in companies like JPM (CAFRs and AFRs) is to what I was referring. Yes, I was being a bit tongue in cheek.

Lot of posters whining about how bad the country is being run,how the working half of the people are so hard done by by having to support the other half who apparently just sit around and collect government entitlements eg; food stamps, welfare, free medical..And all the while living with a government run by a Kenyan despot whose sole purpose is evidently pushing the country toward Socialism if not out right Communism.....If i had to endure such hardships in any given country i think i'd consider moving rather than spending a life in such a stressful ever degenerating country..
