If someone was brought to this country when they were an infant, then I wouldn't oppose their running for President.

But when we start talking about a small change like that, big changes can come from it.

I think we have enough of a pool of good native born American resources for President as it is. No need to change the constitution for one or two people.

I don't support it

but, if there is a change -

Then I would put a stipulation for those that have been Naturalized

Must have become a naturalized citizen by the age of 18
Must be at least age 40 to run
Must have a consecutive residency in the US for 20 years and residency in at least one state for 7 years after the age of 18.
Must have held at least 1 public office position where that person was elected (Mayor, Governor, etc)

A natural born citizen is born in the US to citizen parents. This class of citizen began after the ratification of the Constitution.

We've produced documents showing the Founders removed "born a citizen" and replaced with "natural born citizen". Why...to provide a "strong check".

Being "born a citizen" was not a "strong check".

A natural born citizen is born in the US to citizen parents. Born a citizen is born to foreign parents or a foreign parent who must have been domiciled at birth of the child.

Obama fails the requirements in the original Constitution, the 14th Amendment, the Wong Kim Ark ruling and Minor v Happersett.

Team Obama has retained Obots to spread misinformation around the internet to mislead the public. They abound in this forum.

hey, DC, this thread isn't about Obama and your crazy birther nonsense. Many people in Congress have been proposing amendments to the US Constitution to allow Naturalized citizens to be allowed to run for POTUS. Since at least the 1800's.

Absolutely the POTUS should be a natural born citizen.

Why? No split national allegiance nor could the possibility arise.

Would I support a Constitutional Amendment removing the requirement? No, never.

No, and I'm not a moron for thinking so.

I believe a President should have experienced his (or her) entire lifetime in this country. An American President needs that childhood experience growing up in this country to frame who they become, and how they can relate to people when they are not in positions of power (as adults hold). Look at the past Presidents: Clinton, Obama, Reagan, Carter, Nixon, all were sharply shaped by their respective childhoods in this country. You just can't experience that growing up outside the country.

There were very legitimate reasons for writing this requirement at the time.
