Hmmmm...another random act of journalism from the WaPo. Who knew?

This really spells out what a disaster his "reset" (that was never needed, btw) has really been. Relations are worse now than before, Iran is on the brink of a nuke and still, obama thinks he can "talk" to them.

Obama’s foreign initiatives have faltered - The Washington Post

Quote:
The easiest one to document — and the one most likely to draw Republican attention next fall — is the busted Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

Obama’s next big project was global nuclear arms control — an initiative so impressive to Swedes that it won him the Nobel Peace Prize before he could act on it.

This brings us to Obama’s most distinctive — and most ill-fated — idea, and the one most identified with his 2008 campaign: the determination to “engage” with U.S. adversaries such as Iran, North Korea, Syria and Venezuela.
Now, if only the corrupt media would start detailing just how much he has bungled the whole affair. But again, this is what a child brought up at the knee of radical socialists think good foreign policy is all about.

Yes, I do recall that Iraq had nukes too... oh, wait...

Everyone conveniently seems to have nukes when they need an excuse to start another war. Just saying, that's the trend..

Yes, Obama's foreign policy is a failure in that he failed to deliver on anything he said about ending America's wars in the Middle East. Sorry if the discussion is not going in the direction you would like.

I know Rick Perry said he would bring troops back into Iraq, and some other candidates didn't rule it out and said they might have to...

As much as I don't want it to happen, if were honest, it's going to be an easy win for O in 2012.

Sure, and don't take this as any endorsement of Obama's foreign policy because it's no different from any of his predecessors. But let's go point by point.

1) Israel-Palestine. Israel is a bad faith actor which has zero interest in negotiating a peace settlement with the Palestinians. Their goal is the expulsion of all Palestinians from Israel, and they'll continue expanding through settlements until that goal is met. No outside actor short of war with Israel will stop this.

2) Nuclear arms control. In all his bluster he author fails to mention the one actual nuclear threat- Pakistan. NK, Iran, Russia, they're all domestic threats more than anything else. Iran, if they ever develop nukes, will use them as a bargaining tool for regional superiority, as every other 4th world tinpot dictatorship has done. Pakistan's ISI which functions as a shadow within a shadow government is an actual wild card actor with zero compunction about selling material and technology to anyone.

3) The rest of the article. Again, none of those countries are worth worrying about unless you're unlucky enough to live in one of them. No mention of the oppressive regimes and mass government killings in Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Bahrain, etc. all steadfast US allies (okay, he mentions Bahrain offhandedly). The Green movement in Iran is a pro-Western neoliberal putsch which poses as much threat to the public good as the current Islamist theocracy. But then again this is WaPo we're talking about and they never met a privatization regime they didn't like. But Mr. Diehl's complaint was why didn't Obama help out. Obviously getting involved in fomenting an uprising in Iran, of dubious strength and ability to succeed, is a colossally stupid idea which even a naif such as Obama knew not to back.
