I know there are areas that could do with some, but maybe a bit of Communism could help there, that is, people working just for the sake of helping the community, and each other, and also improving living standards. (If you have enough food to live and work, why ask for financial reward ?).
Where is all this growth going, what’s the purpose, why?
Is it really needed?

What growth? While the recession may be lifting in some areas, it is not in many others.
While job losses may be slowing, we still haven't re-filled all the jobs that were lost over the past 5 years, and some of those jobs are gone for good. Just because we have staunched the bleeding does not mean that we are well, up on our feet and running again. It's still going to be a while before we are at that stage of recovery.
As with all recessions, there are going to be areas of the country that will never fully recover. But, considering the problems Europe faces compared to ours, I think we are in better shape. And their woes may become our future betterment; it has happened in the past.
I think that your idea of volunteerism is a good one, for sure. Helping others without needing financial reward is, and has always been part of the American way. Living the Golden Rule has never been any more important than it is right now.
