Which is similar to what happened in the past and what will happen again.
And yes..the "talk of deficit reduction" will be put on the table, just like it always is.

Deja vu here...raise the ceiling and kick the can down the road.
But Obama wants a ceiling high enough that this does not come back to be dealt with again until after 2012 elections so $3 trillion may not cut it.

If re-quoting the right wing rhetoric is dumb, well...

all collected money that congress has stolen since the inception of social security should be returned to the taxpayers.

Too bad the public did not agree with President Bush when he proposed allowing people to divert 2-3% of their SS contributions to PRIVATE ACCOUNTS. This would prevent Obama from scaring seniors until the issue is resolved.

Was Obama lying when he said SS checks are NOT guaranteed? "Because there isn't enough cash in the coffers."

Or, was he telling the truth and the "Trust Fund" is empty?
the secret word here is: not guaranteed. You can take that anyway you want. Regardless the checks will arrive and on time. If they didn't he knows he can just walk out on his job now cause he would be through. If you think for one minute the majority of Americans would blame this on the Republicans you need to re-think that.

i don't think he scared many of the 1/2 way intelligent "old folks" I don't know a sole that believes him for a second.

and Tropolis, I haven't heard one senior (by the way, PC would not be Old people or Old Folks) complain about not getting their checks. Most of us say, as much as we would hate it, cut our benefits a little if you have to, but that means cut government retires pay as well and congress's pay. Stop all the foreign aid, no matter how small the funding might be, stop funding Public radio and the Arts, etc.

A guarantee from government is only good when they are interested in taxes.
Like I guarantee the IRS will be coming to see you about your income tax if you don't pay.
Or the govenrment guarantee the war will last longer then they say it will.
Or the government guarantee weapons of mass destruction are clearly still in IRAQ.
Or the government gaurantee the war on terrorism will be a cake way, easy and over in a few months.
Or the government guarantee that your freedoms and liberty are protected.
Or the government guarantee that the TSA won't abuse it powers!
Or the government guarantee that if we just get the debit ceiling lifted we promise to some day cut spending!
The only government guarantee I know for sure is that they LIE and I can assure you with all honesty that government's guarantees are that they will destroy your liberty any chance they get.

Some of us actually learned from when Democrats in Congress did this to President Reagan that the Dems don't keep their word to work on deficits after the fact.

Just saying......

It doesn't matter if it is social security, medicare, military benefits, or repayments to bondholders. The important point is that there will be something that we can't afford if we reach that debt limit...and those somethings will only grow the longer we take no action. That is not a recipe for instilling confidence in your foreign debtholders.

If the Treasury didn't send out those SS checks on 8/3 Wall Street would tank and tank hard.
If they have to hold back payments on something, it should be something insignificant else the world will get the message that the US doesn't play fair and will hold back payments.

The President is playing with fire here on a global scale.
