In Tela, Honduras I pay money to a street gang and the local sheriff.

It is just a different world.

Naples, Italy.

Got off on the wrong exit to go to Pompeii and ended up in the worst part of Naples...

All those quarters I spent on video games in the 80's paid off, I was able to drive through the place without a scratch!

Rio was scary, so was Porto Velho in Brazil and the Yungas of Bolivia (a major coca producing area, where everyone assumed I was CIA or something). The slums of La Paz Bolivia were an experience; I lived for a few months in El Alto, and while I didn't feel particularly worried about my safety, it was about the poorest place I've ever lived, and was a real eye-opener, along with the department of Pando, Bolivia, where I spent about 6 months wandering around.

South America's hell holes make the USA's hell holes look like Disneyland. The first thing I do when going to places like that is to ditch my American made clothes/stuff, buy what everyone else is wearing and try to blend in.

So black people riding the metro make you feel like you need your gun? Might want to reflect on that!

Murders on the green line last year: 0.
