She spent $25,000 on new White House china, launched the “Just Say No” anti-drug campaign, and now Nancy Reagan ranks first in a new national poll evaluating present and past First Ladies.

Twenty-four percent of those in the Vision Critical/Angus Reid survey ranked Reagan as America’s best First Lady, with Hillary Clinton in second place at 19 percent.

Hmm. Appears that the choice of 'best First Lady' may have been limited to those who are still alive. Seems like an odd way to conduct a poll.

Sorta like, "Who is the best President" and limiting it to Mr. Bush Senior and Junior, Mr. Carter, Mr. Clinton and Mr. Obama.

I recall when Mrs. Reagan got blasted for the China purchase. I thought it was money well spent, since it was for the formal State dinners. I imagine that China is getting pretty ratty by now.

The china the White House was using before the Reagans was a DISGRACE. It was all mismatched and lots of it was chipped. It was an embarrassment to have a state dinner and serve your guests with it.

I agree the poll should have included First Ladies that are no longer living. Jackie Kennedy or Eleanor Roosevelt would probably have gotten high marks.

I vote Eleanor Roosevelt. She pissed off Franklin on a regular basis.

There is definitely some selective memory going on. I was okay with her, but she was regularly blasted by the press and the public. Kitty Kelly feasted on her in her unauthorized biography. She was not a beloved figure, but I think her strength and love for her husband as he was fading away garnered her a lot of sympathy.

Plus she had a cool lover in Frankie.

Jackie O would get my vote. She was better looking.
