Perhaps someone could enlighten me, as it is confusing. Nearly every week, there is an article in our local newspaper concerning the arrest of someone who has in thier possession downloaded child porn from the internet.

I am a little ignorant, but how in the hell is this stuff available "to download" in the first place! I am a little surprised that these sources, where ever they may be, are not shut down and banned in the first place. Is this not illegal to create and dispense? If made outside of the US, how can this still not be blocked?

Excuse the ignorance, but how the hell does this type of trafficking ever happen in the first place!?

I am quite serious. Obviously, child porn is a crime. How is it that this information is available on the web? It would seem as though such material could be blocked, the sources identified and shut down, and prevent the lion's share of this trade.

The Internet is a vast collection of interconnected databases around the world that no law enforcement entity can control.

There is no "off" button. So it is nearly impossible to "scrub" the whole net of illegal and obscene materials.

The FBI and other entities can shut down sites and arrest people but they can't be everywhere at once. Plus the people who are into this stuff operate in secrecy. Its the same reason we can't get rid of Al Qaeda on the Internet.

You think the internet is widely and strictly regulated? You must be living in liberal la-la land...

You can find instructions on how to make ammonium nitrate bombs on the internet, and cause your own Oklahoma City attack. Hell it'll even go into detail on how to get supplies without getting noticed.

The Internet is the wild west, and is just what America is supposed to be, free. If someone chooses to use it in an irresponsible manner, then you arrest them for it. But you don't regulate it to prevent people from obtaining things.

The bigger question is how do we diagnose people who like child pornography, and how do we help them resolve the psychological problems.

Brain Scans and DNA profiles and you don't on your 2nd question. You slap a GPS device on them and monitor 24/7. I would prefer to lock them up and throw away the key.

You need to remember, that a lot of illegal stuff available on the internet are not available on U.S. servers, so the U.S. cannot touch any server that falls outside its jurisdiction. They tried to do that with a popular P2P site but the actual server is located somewhere in Africa, so Sweden and the EU were not able to shut it down.

And on another note, regulation of the internet, Chinese or Australian (they tried to filter the internet through the ISP level and failed) style, is always a bad thing as governments have an extremely bad habit and a horrible track record of stepping outside its original boundaries

Ok tough guy. Why don't we do that with all the criminals in the U.S.? Let's be like the Saudis and Taliban, and chop the hands off criminals and stone adulterers to death. You'd be happy living in a Shariah country wouldn't you. Or China for that matter

So if someone came up with a cure for this psychological illness, you'd be against helping these people?
