Generally defense systems are stand-alone and physically separate from any other systems. But, if you can destroy a company's logistics and other systems then you can bring the whole thing to a standstill.

I don't think there is a good realization about how vulnerable we are to out automated systems getting attacked. Furthermore, the IT security guys in US corporations are generally too few, underfunded and under-valued. Nobody likes them because security gets in the way of people doing work.
