Recently in American politics, not doing anything or simply preventing Democrats from promulgating their agenda, even if Republicans don't have alternatives, has actually proven to be more beneficial to us than costly.
In my opinion, Republicans don't have alternative solutions because some things the government shouldn't solve.
Typical American neo-liberal conversation:
Conservative: "I really don't like this high-speed rail idea. We don't have enough money."
Neo-liberal Democrat: "Oh yeh, well, well what's YOUR solution to the problem."
Conservative: "What problem?"
Neo-liberal: "You know, uh, the one that will be fixed by high speed rail. Look, as long as you don't have your own solution to contribute, just shut up. Obama is the greatest president ever."

HolyCow! That is a fantastic point!
you are dead right, there are some things republicans dont need an alternative solution to. the issue isnt an issue. we just need to NOT SPEND THE MONEY.

I love the way Christie described Obama's high speed internet access proposal. He called it political candy. He asked, who doesn't want high speed internet access? But the reality is, we can't afford it right now.
I thought right after Obama was elected that a really hard economic downturn may be the one thing that can save America. However, this will only be true if the Republicans hold to their guns and my forty years as a Republican does not lend to my optimism.
I continue to believe there are some really bad economic times ahead.
Democrats can't conceive of a problem that the government can't fix and they can't comprehend what it means to not have enough money, this is mainly because they're spending/wasting other people's money while trying to fix every problem they can find that might gain them votes one day.
Yes, but without government warning stickers you wouldn't know not to stand on the top of a ladder on one leg, or point the nozzle of bug spray at your eyes. And after 2014, you won't be able to buy incandescent light bulbs. And we all know how dangerous those buggers are. All praise to Big Government!
Tragically, there remains a world of things that government has not yet gotten its hands on and made safer or unobtainable, thus saving us from ourselves. We can all thank our lucky stars for the progressive mentality, which helps to protect us and our chldren from falling down, jumping off diving boards, playing on jungle gyms, or being on the losing side in competitive sports.
When I think back to my childhood in the 1950s, it's a wonder we survived white bread-based peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, riding bicycles without helmets, swimming in rivers and diving from overhanging trees, reciting prayers in school, one-platoon football, and slow dancing. With girls.
