China only owns about 8% of the US debt (global warming, lawyers, how much)

So why are we so concerned about China? Social security owns more US debt than any other one agency or country. Lets just make sure that stays solvent.

Wow thanks about that
All this crap about China is exaggerated, I always said it
Good for China hedging off those liabilities. Is it good for us? It just means that inflation will be exported to Japan, Germany, Saudi Arabia. I imagine they'll stop buying debt before the food riots reach the parliament buildings.

Great graph. I think that alot of people are under the impression that China owns a very large share of our debt, which is not true.
Why the concern over China?
1. marked trade imbalances
2. pirating of US patents
3. dumping steel to drive US steel out of buisness
4. exporting of manufacturing jobs to China due to very few, if any regulations, no trial lawyers, and very cheap labor.
5. While having a relatively small componant of US debt, there is concern about the Chinese not buying more US debt in the form of T-bills, driving up interest rates and decreasing the value of the bonds.
6. Consumption of more and more resources, driving up the price of oil and other goods.
7. The Chinese military increase in technology
8. artificial low value for Chinese currency, helping to create trade imbalances- money is power
Hmmm, doesn't this destroy that whole 'China needs us more than we need China' line of reasoning?
b-b-b-b-b-ut if we weren't around, China couldn't sell it's stuff? Nevermind that European, Australian, and Latin American stores are filled with their imports. Nope, China cannot sell to anyone but the US, not even themselves.
People want to believe China needs the US like Fox Mulder wanted to believe in spacecraft. Another control freak fantasy.

Yes, China share is about 8% and has been shrinking rapidly in the past two years. I believe it is now about 840 Billion, down from 1.1 Trillion. I thought the Republican mid-term election ads about the China owning the US were funny, but I also knew they were sad in the sense that there are many people who thought they were true.
It is almost as if people NEED something to fear, be it communism, terrorism, global warming, peak oil, and now China, and the political parties play on the fears they help create (mostly the "R" party to be honest).
