Yay! I served with many gay soldiers and they caused no problems. I am happy to see they won't have to live in fear of being kicked out for their sexuality.
I do fear for those who will suffer because of the ignorance of others. This is only the beginning everyone, there is still a long way to go before gay servicemembers can be completely safe.
The US Senate followed the lead of the US House and just voted 65-31 to repeal the law banning homosexuals from serving in the military. Shortly, gay Americans will be able to serve their country openly, honestly, and with integrity. This move by congress reinforces our core American values of equality and freedom. It will serve to strengthen our military by removing a law that makes lying and deceit the codified policy of the US Armed Forces and by allowing all capable Americans to lend their talents to the service and defense of our nation.
What a wonderful day for America. I applaud this move.
The law did not BAN homosexuals from serving in the military.
Why was my thread title edited without my input? - "(DADT)" was added. The congress repealed a law - US Code, Title 10, Section 654. That law outright bans homosexuals from serving in the military. Yes, by virtue of this repeal DADT (Clinton's executive order) is rendered moot and goes away. Congress acted to repeal the law banning gays from serving, not the policy preventing the military from asking. Changing my threat title makes it inaccurate (or am I just being too academic?)
A glorious day for justice, equality, and the principles of life, liberty and happiness. The promise of America is one step closer to be fullifilled.
