The problem is that as much as conservative populists extol the virtues and knowledge of the average American, the average American doesn't know what to do anyway. Americans want lower taxes but they don't want cuts to their entitlements. If you don't go after the mammoth portions of the deficit like the worldwide military escapades and Medicare, the total amount that you could cut from the deficit is negligible.

But Republicans, for all their hot air about being budget hawks, are not stupid enough to seriously pursue cuts to major entitlements, especially in these economic times. Tea partiers, as well, unless they want to be given the boot next election cycle are going to go from budget hawks to budget kittens. Sure, they'll make a big theatrical play out of cutting some earmarks and wasteful spending here and there, but to total effect won't even be a scratch on the deficit.

P.S. An across the board cut for all programs and departments would be a fantastic...ly stupid idea. It totally neglects the fact that not everyone gets an amount proportional to their needs. Some need to be cut more than others and this largely resolves into a philosophical/political debate. Should the military who have blown trillions on wars in the Middle East get the same cut as Transportation who are working on a paltry budget trying to build a somewhat uable infrastructure for America?

I'm against renewing any of the "tax cuts". We have to start paying our debt now or pass it on to our children.

Hmmm, let's see, Pelosi was crowned speaker of the house and the debt went up by $5 trillion since then. I think the congress controls the purse strings.

I'll be damned if the policy makers in congress will spend like drunken democrats, and then shrug their shoulders as if the only answer to the damage their drunkenness caused, is to raise our taxes even higher. How about cut spending, cut government, and cut the salaries of all federal government politicians, and staff? Then we start abolishing or severely cutting back semi-worthless departments and programs instead of raising taxes and stagnating the private sector???

You elected Øbama and he just added $3 trillion more to it, was that caused by tax cuts? Øbama also raised the federal budget by 18%, was that also caused by tax cuts?

Raising taxes will not do anything as long as the cancer in our government is still left unchecked, because they will just keep spending, and spending, because its the only tool in their tool box, they do not know how to do anything else.

"Republicans won big on election day. They say their two big priorities are cutting taxes and reducing the debt. Which is sort of like wanting to lose weight and win 'Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest.'"

You guys are so dishonest, and never finish the sentence. Obama spent because....why? Just because? Or the same reason Bush did at the end of his term? You're taking an emergency situation that required deficit spending, and then pinning it on the guy as something else. I can't think of anything more dishonest and dishonorable than that.

You're also pointing the finger elsewhere to avoid the point. The point is that Bush's tax cuts (during a time of war no less) created a deficit and doubled the national debt. PERIOD.

Furthermore the tax cuts have been in place for nearly a decade. Right now the tax cuts aren't creating jobs are they? Nor have they for the last three years we've been in the ****ter. Why would the GOP think they magically would now? Sometimes I wonder if the right wing zealots have any common sense or think before the repeat their talking points.

You were one of the ones I was hoping would educate himself by using the NYT's budget utility. Your posts prove you badly need a bit of education on this subject. Please use it and learn from it.

Bumped because of Obama caving in to the Republicans and surrendering without a fight. What a wimp and now when the deficit shoots up to even higher levels anyone with half a brain knows why. The total discretionary budget, the items we can cut in the Federal budget, is only $1.9 trillion and our current deficit (not counting the new massive tax giveaways) is $1.4 trillion. I don't care what you cut you will not find a single politicians agreeing to cut 1.4 out of 1.9 (73% of the discretionary budget), which would have to include defense spending, it just won't happen in a million years. The reality is we're going to have to borrow several trillion more dollars from the Chinese, Saudis, and Iranians to pay for these giveaways and then regular people will have to pay them back with interest. This is just an absolutely massive transfer of wealth to the top 1% and it is just because Republicans want to pay off their biggest special interest group. This WILL cause the deficit to explode.
