I know A LOT of hookah smokers and they smoke maybe 15-20 minutes a week at the most, and they share it with 3 or 4 other people...they don't just sit there and puff by themselves.
I haven't studied much about it, but you have cigarette smokers that smoke multiple times a day, are taking in straight burning smoke less than 5 inches away from the ignition source, plus you know that tobacco is FILLED with chemicals that are added during the process.
My shisha ingredients are: Tobacco leaves (actual leaves, not ground up stuff) molasses and a little flavor. I'm not saying it's safer, but I also don't think it's like smoking 40+ cigarettes in a single session.
I don;t smoke, but others in my family use a hooka, and the aroma is a lot nicer than cigarettes by far.
...Most of them think smoking a hookah is much less of a threat to their health than smoking cigarettes, but the research is alarming. It turns out hookah smoking may be much worse...
