Among other things, they cite a comparison of arts and sports attendance described in a little more detail here:

State of the Arts: Pittsburgh Magazine: February 2009 (http://www.wqed.org/mag/features/0209/arts.php - broken link)

Quote:
When Pittsburgh Today, the regional benchmarking project based at the University of Pittsburgh's Center for Social and Urban Research, recently measured 2002 arts attendance versus sports attendance, the arts won the match-up hands down. It was reported that more than 53 percent of Southwestern Pennsylvania residents attended an arts event that year versus 36.2 percent who attended sporting events. In the same year, the percentage of folks participating in the arts totaled 67.8 percent versus 39.4 percent for sports.

Interesting statistics. It's nice to know the arts scene is more vibrant than the sports scene. I guess it stays under the radar because the media gives sports more hype.

Now when I said I knew plenty of people who come to Pittsburgh for things other than sports, I was scoffed at!

Nice to know that is true!

What is the sample? High school, college, and professional sports? Arts - does going to a movie theater count? Museum? Concert at Post Gazette Pavillion?

Hopefully this link takes you to the Pittsburgh Today arts attendance section:

PittsburghToday.org | Indicators (http://www.pittsburghtoday.org/web/indicators.jsp?cat=1 - broken link)

The eight measured arts attendance categories were Museum or Art Gallery, Musical Play, Non-Musical Play, Classical Music, Jazz Performance, Opera Performance, Ballet, and Other Dance. So it looks like movies and popular music concerts weren't included. There is more on engaging in arts activities and arts learning.

I'm not sure on the sports side--I haven't been able to find that yet.

If they were going by attendance at an actual game, that's going to get a much lower number than people who watch on TV.
If they're trying to say that more people in Pittsburgh participated in the arts than watched sports, the numbers are different if you're not counting all the people in the sports bars and at parties and such.

I'm fairly sure they were talking about actual attendance of a sporting event. Of course people can also enjoy art in their home in various ways and that also wouldn't be captured.

Generally, I would agree one shouldn't overemphasize the sports-art comparison part of this because it is really a bit of an apples and oranges situation. Probably more interesting are the comparisons in arts attendance between Pittsburgh and the U.S. as a whole (available if you poke around that link).

I think TV viewership is irrelevant since it doesn't have an impact on the city like actual attendance.
