I know the Pens and Crosby must be helping out a ton, but I am wondering exactly how big the game of hockey is in Pittsburgh. And not just pro-hockey, but hockey at the youth and HS levels as well. I mean, I'm from St. Paul where we easily pack 18,000 fans in for high school games, and I know the Burgh isn't at that level, but I am wondering if hockey is becoming increasingly popular in Pittsburgh. You have an amazing city and I hope the sport becomes big there.

I think I can put this into perspective. We have club and school hockey. It does well. But we don't pack our high school stadiums with 18,000 fans for any sport---not even football. In my experience, that happens mostly in smaller towns that don't have professional sports. For instance, people pack into Harrisburg's high school gyms for basketball games because sports spectating is limited in Harrisburg. When I first moved to Harrisburg, I was absolutely amazed when I was taken on a date to watch a high school basketball game in a packed, not even standing-room remained, high school gym! It was fun. It's just not what Pittsburghers do if they don't have children playing the sport. I'm not trying to belittle St. Paul. I know nothing about the city. But I just did a quick wiki check and I seem to be fairly accurate when it comes to pro sports there compared to what's available in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh is a great hockey town. Any hockey fan would love it here.

I agree. I just don't think we should mislead anyone. 18,000 Pittsburghers would never go see a high school hockey game.

Hey, only 9.07 million people watched the Stanley Cup Final game. It is what it is, a regional sport.

Ya, the Pens are big and that's about it. I don't anticipate it getting any bigger than it is already here. It took a long time just to get where we are now.

Yeah, the Pens have had a strong following for as long as I can remember, and I've been around long enough to remember more than I want.

I used to go to their games in the late 70s when they got soccer crowds - like half or less than they do now. Still fun and exciting to watch - actually MORE so!

I went to some hockey games in the late 70s and early 80s. The arena was packed each time.
