There were a lot of Tambellinis restaurants in Pittsburgh 35 years ago. Wood and 3rd in town, 23rd and E. Carson, Southern Ave and Sandwich in Mt. Washington, several more I think there was one where the Station Square T station is today as well.

My girlfriend was always talking about "we should go to Tambellini's" sometime, but we usually defaulted to Sodini's or one of the delis (Weinstein's, Cantor's, the Gazebo, Iz Cohen). I never got to eat at Tambellini's until 2000 or so, at the one that's closing. It was a low-carb buffet a friend was into. It wasn't bad, but I can't remember a single thing I ate.

I think the Tambellini's she was talking about was in the South Hills, which was a foreign country to me then.

Mmmm...

Downtown Pittsburgh undergoes retail, residential rebirth | TribLIVE

Quote:
Although there were 2,079 rental apartments counted as of the second quarter of 2012, hundreds of apartment units have been added since then. Most of them are in former office buildings, such as the 158 units in 201 Stanwix St., the former Verizon Building.

PMC Properties of Philadelphia, which owns 201 Stanwix, is slowly adding more rental units in former office buildings scheduled to come on line either this year or 2014.

It'll be interesting to see if it translates in the state of downtown annual report, if the trend continues I'd think the population will surpass 10k in 2015, perhaps an important psychological barrier.

In a way I think the "traditional" borders of "Downtown" are going to need to expand in order to fit 10K...even if you take all of available B and C class buildings in the "traditional" I don't think you can reach 10K.

Station Square
Uptown/Lower Hill
The Strip
North Shore

would need to play bigger roles in residential

if I'm not mistaken, the "expanded" downtown has already reached 10k. I don't think it's impossible for downtown to add another 2k people
pg 13 has a nice chart (through 2011) about what's happend to residential units

There are also many other neighborhoods that aren't within the official boundaries of the Golden Triangle that are still walkable to Downtown. We frequently walk Downtown in fair weather from Polish Hill. You can also walk there from Lower Lawrenceville, a large chunk of the North Side, parts of South Side, and Mt. Washington.
