No bailout, no connector, agency says - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

Well ... can't say I didn't see it coming. So much for the tunnel being the "first phase" in connecting the central north side neighborhoods to downtown.

I'm still baffled by this. I thought this entire project was already paid for by federal government money, and with the boring already complete UNDER BUDGET......ugh, it just makes no sense to me.

What a huge black eye for the city if this project doesn't get completed. I guess they can turn the tunnels into a bike path.

Here's an article that explains it better. Tunnel To Nowhere? Port Authority Project Could Be Done - Money News Story - WTAE Pittsburgh (http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/money/18538082/detail.html - broken link)

Apparently, the tunnel boring was under budget, but the costs of rails, substations, and other crap is what has become too expensive. Whatever.

From what I understand, rising costs of materials were accounted for in the budget, but costs of concrete and steel went higher (much higher) than anticipated.

Don't worry, all the tax money from the casino will pay for everything. Just ask Fast Eddie Rendel.

Tunnel shouldn't have been built in the first place. They should put it on hold and re-bid the work. Prices are starting to come back down due to the overall collapse of the economy.
