HI,

I will be moving to pittsburgh this year, and I'm looking at a few places on N. Neville street near CMU. I noticed that apt nearer centre street towards the north are cheaper than ones to the south, near CMU. I will be attending Pitt and was wondering if the area around North Neville and Centre is safe and quiet? would any of you have problems walking around that area very late at night?. I know almost nothing about Pittsburgh except to stay out of homewood and the hill district, and would appreciate any insights into the area, and whether its worth it to pay 200 extra a month to live closer to CMU vs. Centre/upper hill area.

I live on the corner of 5th and Neville (about two blocks away). I had buddies who lived on the corner of Craig and Centre. Its a bit rougher up there but nothing too crazy. By the time you get to Neville your pretty much in Shadyside (although not the heart of it). There s usually a fair amount of homeless around the Craig/Centre intersection, but theres a large college population down there so its not bad. I'd say its worth it for cheaper rent, but you will be farther away from Pitt.

I lived at Neville and Bayard when I first moved to Pittsburgh. It was a fine area, very convenient, quieter than the central part of Oakland. There are high-end condos and townhouses on Bayard and more rentals on Neville. Never had any problems, and I used to walk home at 1 or 2 am.

Pitt has a service to bus you home I think...pitt kids..fill in the info?

Its the city and you have to be aware. Crime targets students because they do silly things like walk home alone at 2 am. Generally not a good idea to do anywhere though.
