Again, English has never needed the government's help to maintain its dominance in the United States before, and there is no sign of it needing such help today. Indeed, it has been almost 100 years since Teddy's time, and English is still dominant.

that's different than saying nobody spoke their native tongue. I think it more reflects a change in our government than a change in the immigrants. if you couldn't read english, you'd have someone translate for you. now it's more important "not to offend anyone" be they american or not.

Just to be clear, to my knowledge the English version is the official version of all regulations and such. As a courtesy, we sometimes also provide Spanish translations. And I'm not at all sure it is true that the government has never provided translations in any other language.

I'm 58, never in my life did I see walking into a 7-11 a sign in both English and another language, until recently.

I know that before WWI in Pennsylvania, you would have seen German signs in many stores, German-language newspapers, lots of children were being educated with German as their primary language, and so on. Here is a nice summary:

The German-Americans-Chapter Seven

As that article explains, though, by around 1900 interest in preserving German was already waning among subsequent generations of German-Americans, and then WWI came along and accelerated that process.

This was fairly common in the early 20th century.

There is nothing wrong with reviving an old thread, provided some new content is added. Simply saying "I agree" is not a good enough contribution, but that's not the case here.
