i think the issue here boils down to renters vs homeowners and taxpayer subsidized versus free market. this really isn't a racial issue besides than when the media makes it to be to get views.

I'm progressive and will happily tell the other "progressives" that we don't need help finding people affordable housing in Pittsburgh.

This may add fuel to the fire. SCR needs to become an advocate and work to asist his community. These black organizations have been around for decades.

SCR, have you considered the Woodland Avenue and Brighton Road homes through the Brightwood Civic Group? They offer a deferred $50K mortgage, which you never repay for as long as you live there, as well as URA down payment and closing cost assistance, and a 10 year tax abatement. You can have a totally fixed up home 1.5 miles from downtown, a block from a grocery store, for $129K-$159K (nominally), but the actual mortgage payment would be more similar to a $80K-$110K mortgage ($500-$900 a month).

This is an excellent program for city residents. We had a similar program is our neighborhood but it was through the URA. These programs work to revitalize entire communities one home owner at a time.

Initially I thought this was a tear down. On closer inspection I noticed the hardwood in some rooms. It has a garage and full basement. The concrete walkway looks newer as well. The main focus would have to be adding curb appeal. Replacing the metal awning with cloth and a nice paint scheme will go a long way.

Talking about cheapies, I like the potential of this house. It's in the part of Spring Hill closest to Deutschtown, so it would pass as walkable to SCR. The old owners didn't mess with the fenestration, meaning all you'd need to do is take off the ugly siding, decaying awning, and replace the rusty gutter and you'd get a nice looking house on the outside. Inside still has original details like the living room fireplace, unpainted stairway, and some of the kitchen built ins. Nice view of downtown from the attic window.

If you wanted move in ready and don't mind Marshall Shadeland, this house looks great. I wonder how much money the current owners lost on fixing it up?
