I can recall being taken to a place on Sarah, I think, back in the early 1980s, that may have been called Emil's? Or at least the old man who owned it was Emil. I have not been able to figure out where exactly it was - around 26th or 27th?

The Evergreen on Penn Ave was a favorite hangout when I was still living in Regent Square.
I lived in Point Breeze for a bit (a long time ago) and wanted to like the Evergreen but I couldn't take the smoke.

Years ago we used to hang out at Jeromes (think that was the name) in the south side which is now Jaggerbush, 23rd and Jane. Was a great cheap no frills bar, rented the back room for a buddies Bach party.

Beaver valley still has a good number of umm.. plain? bars.. Mulligans in Hopewell, Kendrews in Aliquippa etc...

Speaking of Beaver Valley bars, the ultimate dive bar was the Kobuta Hotel on Rt 18 in Center/Monaca. You could go in there anytime of day and find someone with an eye patch, missing teeth, or with one leg. Miss that place! Paris Grill and Bar None in Quip are good dives too.

taverns vs. bars - I seem to recall that there was, at some point, a definition in the state of Pennsylvania about taverns only selling beer (and maybe liquor?) and bars selling beer, wine and liquor? Or vice versa? Was that true or am I thinking of another state?

There used to be bars that only had a license to sell beer here in Pennsylvania.

The owner of Lou's is apparently quite a character, judging from the shooting incident he was involved with.

Dee's in the South Side. You can rent pool tables by the hour instead of paying per game.

Does anyone know any dives here (particularly in the South Side) that don't allow smoking. I loved going to dives back in Ohio, but I tend to avoid them here because of all the smoke.
