I was wondering how Polish Hill is?I'm thinking of coming from Cleveland to visit for a day and see the sights, one of them is the Immaculate Heart of Mary. I'm wondering if there is anything else to see in the Polish Hill area, ie Polish stuff, or has it become a ghetto. Cleveland has the Slavic Village area, used to be Polish, now its just has the most foreclosures in the nation, rampant crime, thugs roaming about, and the sparse remaining older Poles hiding in their homes. Is the Polish Hill area like this?

It's not as bad as Slavic Village; there are some abandoned homes here and there, but it's nowhere near the worst part of Pittsburgh. It still has a working class feel to it, though it's not as full of activity as nearby Bloomfield or Lawrenceville. There's not much else to see than the church, which is great. There once was a business district there but everything closed gradually; there may still be a neighborhood bar or two.

Polish Hill is a safe little area. As stated in other posts, most of the retail is gone, but there are still old-timers living there and some young families who have moved in. A young family I know bought an old car garage and rehabbed it into a great house. The neighborhood literally sits on the side of a hill between Oakland and the Stip District, so get your legs ready!

Gooski's! Popular with old-timers and hipsters alike.

Yes, as is typical in Pittsburgh neighborhoods, both the church and local hangout (Gooski's) are quite the destinations. Polish Hill is mostly residential with a few neighborhood bars. I know folks who live there and love it. They don't call it Polish "Hill" for nothing!

Polish Hill is pretty diverse, with lots of students as well as older residents. It is very safe to walk around during the day. The church is certainly the main architectural attraction. At night the local tavern has great live music.
