I sense a damage-control effort following the news about some buildings being destroyed despite their historic preservation designation:

Brothers have big dreams of restoring Iron City* | TribLIVE

Unfortunately this article is short on real details, but the slideshow is very cool.

It sure is sad the local people just buy the crap beer they see on NASCAR cars instead of supporting our local businesses. Iron is as good as any of the yellow beers. It actually is better now they are located in a soft water area and it doesn't have a bit to it anymore, but those beers are more about advertising than anything else. Wish people would support local when it comes to that. I had a few Irons last night. Certainly better than Yuengling.

Would be nice if they could fix up those old buildings, but so much damage that was done from those drinking Coors or Bud for some unknown reason, it is probably too late for them.

You do know that Iron is no longer really "local" don't you? They moved and offered the current employees around $8 a hour to work at the new facility. Considering that gas alone for the daily communte would eat up most of the paycheck most employees didn't go and were left out in the cold.

I'd make the proposed restaurant a brew pub. The rest of the building a hotel and/or condo.

Guess it's a done deal now, but I'd have liked a portion of the property made into the longed for, until recently, Pittsburgh Hostel.

Iron city is contract brewed afaik out of the old Latrobe brewery itself a victim of AB s decision to move production to.Newark NJ.

doubt you'll find much agreement about it being better than yuengling.

Iron City is absolute garbage, but then again so is Bud Light and Coors. I can't really tell you which is worse, though. It's hard to judge degrees of terrible. If I went to a party with only Iron City, I'd drink water. Hell, I'd rather try to ferment some Orange Juice on the radiator.

Gonna have to disagree about Yuengling for sure. It's not bad at all. It tastes like it has a lot more preservatives than 5 years ago or so, but it's still a decent low end option.

If you like Yuengling better than Iron, you have NO taste. Yuengling changed their recipe when they sold out and started to mass market. The water they now use is VERY hard and horrible for making beer. It is one of the most sour beers I have had. Back in the day, Yuengling was actually a pretty good beer that had a nice little carmel overtone. Now? Sour. Iron is at least smooth now that they have moved the brewing operation to Latrobe. Latrobe has a great water table and that makes all the difference. Iron is now actually a basic yellow beer that you would find pretty much anywhere. I wish they would expand into some craft beers considering they have such a good situation with that water.

Anyway, it is personal taste. I am having an Iron right now. Sure I would rather have an Innis and Gunn or a La Fin Du Monde or a nice Sammy Smith, but sometimes I just want a regular old beer. Iron is as good as the next.

Not a definitive and doubtful expert panel but they seem fair and rate Iron City as....average.

Iron City Beer - Beer Review - YouTube

This was done in early 2010. It's just after Iron City brewing moved to Latrobe so I assume they are sampling the Latrobe produced beer.

Those guys are a bunch of dopes, but yeah, it is "average". What do you think I am going to say about it? Yuengling is below average and Bud is a little below average for those style beers. It is just a yellow fuzzy beer, nothing more, but if you are drinking that kind of beer, why not drink a local one? They are not fine craft beers. If you want to bump it up, do it, but don't sit there drinking your Coors thinking it is better. It isn't and it is dumb not to drink a local beer. Support those in this region and less trucks on the road. Just logical.

Wow, I never thought of drinking a local beer as being...."green". Al Gore should have mentioned that in "An Inconvenient Truth".
