From the Trib:

Long-troubled area undergoing a renaissance | TribLIVE

I know it's been said on here a lot, but I feel Uptown has a LOT of potential, considering it is between downtown and Oakland. Crime is coming down (as stated in the article) and more housing units are being developed. I rode through there this past weekend and I think it is definitely somewhere I would live if I hadn't purchased a house. Hopefully the momentum keeps up in that area.

And it is just getting started--there is an incredible amount of infill potential in Uptown, and hopefully those who are land-banking there are ready to start cashing in.

Here I go again sticking my neck out.

I will predict uptown is prime for high rise, upscale condos built around a walkable shopping area dotted with pocket parks linked by bike paths.

How's that for a prediction.

There is only one caveat, the timing isn't right now, but I think in 5 years it could happen.

I'm not sure about highrises, but I could see a lot of midrise infill (defined as buildings in the 4-12 story range).

Brian,

I envision condos that are high enough to command a view.

I'm thinking these condos would appeal to boomers with bucks. As the baby boomers age they will be looking for amenities without hassle. As their needs change they will have the time to appreciate all that Pittsburgh has to offer.
Condos in this area could provide easy access to sports, arts, shopping, and health facilities without the hassle of traveling a moderate distance. It would provide accessibility for those who seek a sense of community but may have limited mobility.

I would also like to see a community garden for those who enjoy growing flowers and vegetables.

Random contribution:

If you zoom in and out in this view, you can see the new infill along Dinwiddie appear and disappear:

Buildings with some floors above four-five stories or so should be sufficient for that purpose.

In general, though, while a view would be nice, I think the other factors you mention will provide a lot of appeal at any height.

Edit:

A couple views from what I believe is the fourth/fifth floor of the 5th Avenue HS Lofts:
