I'm in Oakland today attending the job fair as a recruiter and noticed a large construction site next to SnS. Anyone know what it is?

Found it:

Quote:
At the corner of Fifth Avenue and University Place, a 10-story 559-bed residence hall will be constructed, at a projected cost of $59 million.* Commercial retail space will be created on the first floor, and a student wellness center will be installed on the second floor.* This building replaces a surface parking lot, and the University Place Office Building, which was demolished to make way for the dormitory.
SnS = Soldiers and Sailors

SnS I couldn't think of at all, except Shop n Save, and I couldn't think of one in Oakland. Thought I just didn't know where it was.

Good for anything that replaces a surface parking lot there, big waste of space. Although it's not the block I was hoping it seems. The one on the other side, on Bigelow, is the biggest waste.

It is too bad they tore down the University Place Office Building, which was a nice little historic building.

But otherwise this is obviously a big improvement in land-usage. And the building is decent-looking (not spectacular, but Pitt's post-WWII attempts to go for "spectacular" have had mixed results at best).

I like the look. Blends in pretty well with other Oakland architecture.

While we're on the subject, does anyone know what they are building further down on Fifth toward downtown, just as you pass Carlow U. and make the bend for the parkway on-ramp?

That's going to be a new upscale apartment complex called Portal Place.
