The headline news is that in December, the U.S. economy added 212K private sector jobs (minus 12K government jobs lost).

Looking at the details, it is fairly promising for the Pittsburgh region as well. Significant gainers included mining, construction, durable goods manufacturing, trade/transportation/utilities, professional and business services, and health care:

Those have recently been strong sectors for the Pittsburgh region as well, so hopefully when we get local December numbers, it will turn out we are continuing to build on those strengths.

Recently, just blindly predicting a good jobs report for Pittsburgh would make it look like you had a working crystal ball.

Nah . . .

Lump of labour fallacy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

People moving here are likely going to create as many or more new jobs as they take. In fact, I suspect that is a non-trivial factor in the recent increase in local construction jobs.

Of note, Hoffman nailed his December national jobs projection.

Hoffman is about as good at the economic prediction game as it gets (which, admittedly, is like winning the tallest Pygmy contest).

Anyway, this may not be perfectly good news from an overall socioeconomic perspective, but it also helps explain why the Pittsburgh economy is doing relatively well in this recovery:

Jobs For College Grads

As we have discussed before, if you look at our younger workforce specifically, it is among the highest-educated in the country, and that correlates with the sources of job growth in the recovery.
