Darn right! When I was a kid, I never thought much about the midwest, even though my mom was from Wisconsin. Interestingly, of my friends and acquaintances, I am one of the few who ever went to the midwest during my youth, and the only one who ever vacationed there.

Oh, I knew about the steel mills in Gary, IN. The USSteel plant there made the same products as my dad's plant in Elwood City, PA, so my dad used to (jokingly) threaten to get transferred to Gary. I had NO idea Gary is really suburban Chicago, or that there was a lot of steel making going on in Chicago until I moved to IL as an adult. DC was everyone's dream city.

A lot of that has stayed true as well. DC, especially in this economy, is where the majority of the good jobs are at. Also, other than Cleveland and Columbus, the other mid western cities are a decent drive away and by the time you drive to say Indianapolis, you could have gone to NYC, Atlantic City, Williamsburg etc which are IMO all more desirable destinations

Not among gay men in my age bracket (20s), from my experience. However, I would personally much prefer NYC.

Detroit is also closer than NYC, although I am not sure that helps the Midwest's case.

Chicago is only 90 miles farther from Pgh than NYC, another 1 1/2 hours driving.

Normally true until the Ohio turnpike decides to make road work every 5-10 miles the way it was when I went there this summer haha, I will say that Detroit isn't all bad though, few other cities allow you to visit two countries within the same day trip

Speaking of which, Toronto is also closer than NYC (not sure what that means, but it is a fact).

This is all very timely for me. For the last month, I've been trying to decide where to take a fall weekend trip. The decision has been so difficult because the time and expense of traveling to New York, Chicago, Toronto, Baltimore, or Philly are all relatively comparable. Of course each trip has its own merits (e.g. MegaBus Route, convenient flight times, easy drive, etc.), but one doesn't stand out as a best option.
