The only numbers that matter are the U.S. Census. We'll find out more soon.

that's not really true, the census tells you what happened over the past ten years, they don't tell you what's happening today.

Too bad we couldn't get data from another large company like Ryder Truck rentals. If their list is similar to U-Haul then the data may be somewhat accurate.

I think the outmigration over the past 10 years was over estimated a little bit and that our population may be higher than what the census estimates have for the area.

I moved 5 miles and the outfit that moved me used a Hertz rental truck.

I'm not quite sure what to make of that number, but it is another small indication that some combination of factors may be leading to a reveral of recent migration trends.

It will indeed be interesting to see the Census numbers. It is true they strictly speaking won't tell you what has been happening recently, but for complex reasons it will be interesting to see if the recent "official" Census estimates were accurate or not.

All "data" aside, I'm astonished just in passing the amount of times I hear people have just moved to Pittsburgh, or are relocating to the Pittsburgh area. Keep in mind, they might not be living in the actual city limits which will obviously do nothing for the city population number. I think with all the positive going on, anyone who truly feels Pittsburgh is dying WANTS to to think that way.

Youngabe--could agree more with you. I've lived in Pittsburgh my entire life and growing up my dad has always told me, on our many trips downtown, Pittsburgh is a commuter city. Downtown is dead after 5 pm on Friday. Nearly every new housing development seems to not only be well outside the city proper limits, but also pushing further and further towards the Allegheny County line. Look at the city population (330,000ish) versus the seven county metro ("Greater Pittsburgh") area (pushing 2.4 million). There's a reason Stubenville calls itself "burb of the burgh."

The census does give you a snapshot of where an area was at a point in time.
