I believe pman's point was basically that the Census won't tell you how many people moved to Pittsburgh in January 2010 to December 2010, the time period of the UHaul data. Which is absolutely correct.

I did not see any reference to the U Haul data at all in his post. He was talking about the last ten years.

The OP posted a link to UHaul data for January-December 2010.

The second poster then posted:

The only numbers that matter are the U.S. Census. We'll find out more soon.
pman then posted:

Quote:
that's not really true, the census tells you what happened over the past ten years, they don't tell you what's happening today.
Now I suppose it is possible that by Post #3, pman had completely forgotten about Post #1, and was just spontaneously noting that Census data doesn't tell you about what has been happening recently. But I am going to go out on a limb and guess that pman is not afflicted with such a terrible short-term memory.

brian is 100% correct. think of the census as a deciannual balance sheet. you can infer whats changed since 2000 but its better suited as a scorecard for past performance than a bible for future performance. for example, many people use carloadings by car type to gauge the current and immediate health of the economy rather than stagnant survey data. thay isnt to say it isnt useful but its not the only data that matters.

As a 19 year old nearing age 20 who can't WAIT to get out of Gibsonia, I don't think Pittsburgh appears to be dying per se. People might be vacating the city itself, but there are new housing developments popping up in my area all the time. To me it looks like this: If you grow up here in the suburbs, you leave as soon as you enter/finish college. If you're from elsewhere, you might move here when you reach your early 30s and you're ready to settle down and raise a family, or perhaps when you're even older and looking for work.

If you're moving to Pittsburgh, it's not because you love what the city has to offer; it's a cool little city but you have to live here to get a feel for it. You're probably moving here for work and the low cost of living, and maybe the good school districts that lie in the suburbs. If you're looking to live in an actual urban city, you probably don't want to live in a tiny old rowhouse in a city where there's nothing going on and the arts/entertainment/wealthy areas all lie right next to the ghetto.
