I don't recollect a thread dedicated to Geology...and after this day, I thought with the diversity of all the posters here, there may be some interesting views! And if there was a thread already, my apologies .

This is a rock glacier:

A fairly rare thing compared to its cousin the ice glacier.

And this is Lion's Head (the dark rock mountain in the foreground):

This is all that remains of an ancient volcano that blew itself to bits ages ago.

Others??!!??

I suppose the 'twigs' in 'Twigged' are some of the remains left over from the '80 eruption? Beautiful images!

Default Geology on a small scale

Petrified wood, Ecalante Utah.

The minerals consist of mostly quartz. Often traces of minerals give petrified wood its unique color and characteristics. Iron oxide will cause reds, browns, yellows and earth tones. Copper and chrome oxide create greens, silicates of aluminum produce whites and manganese dioxide makes black.

I always say that the layers of sedimentary rock seen in erosion formations and road cuts are the pages of the earths autobiography. I am embarrassed to post any of my pics now after seeing all those beautiful shots.

Ok.

Before the Lower Flathead River cut this canyon, the water draining out of Flathead Lake took another route. It went through the "Big Draw" and followed the present coarse of "The Little Bitterroot River" and rejoined its present coarse near the Sloan Bridge. This is on CSKT lands in western Montana.
