I know those of you here are more serious photographers so maybe the wrong place to ask. My daughter wants a digital camera but specifically says she doesn't want anything expensive or fancy. In fact, she says she doesn't even like cameras where you can see everything like pores and flyaway hair, etc. She uses her iPhone for pictures and the only reason she wants digital camera is so she can print pictures instead of emailing them. Not quite sure what she means by that exactly, unless she means she emails them to herself and then prints them from her computer? Or maybe she wants to take out the memory card and take it in to have pictures printed.
At any rate, she wants a digital camera with memory card, but not a high end one at all. She IS pregnant, though, so I can anticipate her wanting a better quality camera once the baby is born. Maybe it's too much to ask, but is there something in the $150 and under range that would fit what she is looking for, maybe a little better than she is looking for? I know for $150 it's not going to be a great camera, but then she's not looking for a professional quality camera.
I have had a Canon PowerShot A590 for several years and it takes pretty good pictures. I had a Nikon FM in the 70s when I as an aspiring photographer, but haven't done any photography since other than point and shoot.
Cameras in this price range don't vary much in quality, pretty much anything will do, especially if she is not fussy about image quality. The main thing is making sure it's the right size for her, right amount of zoom, and that the interface works for her, is easy to use, etc.
Check out the camera feature search at Digital Photography Review. Since she is used to a camera phone, I would go with what they define as "ultra compact" - select any other features you think she might like and then sort the results by price, lowest to highest. I would also find out what she means by wanting to print pictures instead of emailing them. Perhaps she is talking about emailing pictures to other people instead of printing them out and showing/giving them to people? Because there are certainly ways to print photos taken by a phone. But figuring out what she means may allow you to choose the right camera for her. She could get a small photo printer herself and if her camera is compatible, plug it straight into the printer and print. There's all kinds of options so figure out what she means.
She said one with an SD card so she can take it to Walgreens or whatever and print pictures.
SD cards are standard on just about every point and shoot cam on the market. I don't know of any that don't have one.
