Originally was going to guess maraca, but someone else did first. Looked like lacquered wood & print seemed to be European.
Yes, after going back & rereading it - I realized you didn't discount Nests & Dolls...then it hit me Russian Nesting Dolls, I was going to edit "wooden" for Russian, but you already replied. I was so excited in my guess I couldn't get the "wood" outta my head! LOL, I'm a little persnickity.
