It is, however, interesting that while the quoted price is $699, the quoted "List Price" is
$1,139, which is only slightly below the 90,000 yen price that GadgetRick translates to $1160. That does suggest the actual street prices when it is available will be less than perhaps $800, and only slightly higher than the current cost of the older version.
The biggest distinction of the new version for Nikon users is inclusion of focus motor in the lens, meaning it will work with all Nikon DSLR's, not just the higher end models.
The Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 ... Ken Rocwell states that this is the best Ultra Wide lens available for Nikon DX cameras under $600 in 2008 You can buy it now today on E-Bay for under $700
I wouldn't buy it because Ken Rockwell (LOL) likes it but because it's a great lens. But I'm sure there's a link from his site to buy it.
I have the DX Pro for Canon, and it's a superb little lens. Solidly build, and a great performer, so I can only assume that the DX II is a great lens.
I've seen the Tokina ATX116 for $599 on Adorama. The only thing stopping me from it is whether I could benefit more from something like Samyang 8mm Fisheye (it has a 180 degree AOV on APS-C), or 11-16 UWA zoom. The former is also a lot less expensive. The other aspect being that my widest lens goes to 16mm and consequently sufficient wide angle coverage.

When did you see it for that price? It used to be that price until a (literally) overnight increase of $100.
Recently on Amazon when I was contemplating the idea, and somewhere else (probably a Sony forum) which mentioned Adorama.
PS. Just checked Adorama. Currently they're advertising $659, after $40 MIR, for all... Sony (Alpha), Nikon and Canon.
That's a good thing then. They've come back (a little) on the price.
The increase was very recent (like in the last 3ish months) which was why I was curious.
