This is the first time I've worked with a wide angle lens.
It's a Sigma 10-20mm.
This shot was taken at about a 70-75 degree angle.
What I'm wondering, is this normal or what am I doing wrong?

It appears almost to be having a fish eye effect. May be just the nature of the lens.

It looks like a typical super wide angle shot to me.

Taken with the same lens, but level with the horizon.

The second photo doesn't appear to be twisted as the first. It would be worth it to go back to the barn and shoot it level and see how it comes out.

Nepher,

That's a normal effect of super-wide lenses such as yours and others (the fisheye effect). Soon enough you will figure the right level or heigh in proportion to the subject to achieve what you want. Also, some of the problem can be corrected slightly, not entirely, by using some of the CS5's lens profiles.

But sometimes some of the weird effects of lenses like yours can be quite nice. Some photographers use wide-angle lenses for portraiture photography to achieve very interesting effects, or just to take photos of people sitting right at the same dining table (for example), of just something like this (the lens was close to the dog's face):

You can see some of the weird angles on this photo, but I was very close to the subject (s):

Just have fun with that lens, and every now and then it will amaze you. Mine is a Tokina 11-16mm, but I had a Sigma 10-20 for awhile.

Thanks Ray.
Just going to have to play around with it more like you said and find the angles it will work with.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a wide angle lens for the Sony Alpha series? I have an a330 and would like to pick up a wide angle lens. Currently I have the stock 18-55, a 100-300, a 28mm prime and a 50mm prime. I would love to get one of the Minolta AF series wide angles, or a Sigma comparable.. as well as a good fisheye, but I have no real clue as to what type of wide angle or fisheye to look for..

I would recommend Tokina AT-X Pro 11-16/2.8. It is rare to find a fast ultra wide/fisheye lens to begin with, and this one is built nicely as well. I looked at it a while ago, but could not justify the need for one as I have other holes to fill in my lens lineup. But, if you're looking for one, definitely consider this. IMO, with this lens, Tokina didn't try to maximize zoom range and compromise. Instead, it is more like a prime with some flexibility. With widest aperture at 2.8, it is more usable indoors as well than any other ultra-wide lens.
