i've heard the horror stories of the traffic being bad in scottsdale/phoenix. what is it really like? say a typical commute from phoenix to north scottsdale on a regular day, along the 51...

You mean from N. Scottsdale to Phoenix, like in your other thread you just started?

You can do a search on this very topic. It's been asked before. You will get varying opinions though. I'd say plan for an hour at least.

To an extent, it's a matter of perception. Where are you living now? If you live in the LA area or Monterey to Santa Cruz or Atlanta, you may be pleasantly surprised. If you live somewhere like Winslow, AZ or Dyersville, IA, it will be a nightmare.

It depends on what time you go to work. I travel the 101 in the height of rush hour from Gilbert to N Scottsdale it can take up to an hour and 10 minutes. I have alternative routes though when traffic is really bad and that cuts the commute down to 50 minutes. I agree with the other post, it's a matter of perspective.
