I'm an ex accountant, and generally speaking, my advice is to do them yourself on the computer. Use TaxAct or Turbo Tax. UNLESS you have an unusually complicated return or are self-employed, most people can do this chore fairly easily with those reasonably priced software programs. I beleive H&R Block also has a program, but I've never used it, so I can't specifically comment on it.

You also gain the additional benefit of learning about our convoluted, confusing tax code. That education will help you make decisions that involve purchases that might affect your taxes (i.e. buying a house, misc. deductible expenses, etc.) and probably make you appreciate those politicians who want to simplify our tax code or set up a flat tax.

BTW, if you are getting a LARGE refund, you're doing something wrong with your withholdings. Why give the government an interest free loan?

I agree, just do them yourself. If you want to use an actual tax preperation service though, I would recommend Urquidez Income Tax Services. The owners of that business, Norma & Mayte Urquidez have been friends of the family for years and they are both knowledgable and trustworthy.

don't use H and R Block and other similar outfits....they quickly train people (non-CPAs) this time of year to do quicky returns for customers, then pressure you into an instant refund (at a high fee).....I have not used them, but people who worked for them this way told me that....what a racket....

Still an accountant, and I agree with the above. Most ordinary w-2 people could do a fine job with the various software packages.
